7 Simple Things to Improve Your SEO

Search Engine Optimization can be a very complex subject. On the other hand, there are a few simple things, and one thing simple in concept, that can improve your search engine results without bending your brain. Here they are.

  1. Determine which keywords you want to optimize around. If you know how your target audience is searching for your product or service, it is fairly easy. Even if you don't, you can probably guess some industry phrases that are used. Then go to the Google adwords keyword tool to check popularity of your proposed keywords. When getting started, it may be best to concentrate on keywords that aren't super competitive so that you get traffic quickly.
  2. Put keywords in your title tags. These are found in the meta data in the headers in your site, and, if you are using a CMS, you can usually set the title text within the CMS.
  3. Use a heading (<h1>) with your keywords in the body of the page.
  4. Place the keywords within the text of the page, but don't go crazy. The search engines can recognize when keywords appear so often it is probably artificial.
  5. Organize your pages to concentrate on one or two keywords each.
  6. Make sure the content is useful for visitors. You don't benefit if your visitors bounce, or immediately leave your page.
  7. Keep your content fresh. This is simple in concept, but can be more challenging than a one time pass through the site to perform on page SEO. The search engines, however, like fresh content relevent to the search terms.
